If you've never been to a church service before, or it's been a while, here's a simple guide to what a Sunday morning at Girton Baptist Church looks like — so you can come along without wondering what you're supposed to do.

Welcome

Someone will greet you as you arrive and can show you where everything is — there's no need to know your way around in advance. Come as you are; there's no dress code. Feel free to just sit and observe if you'd rather not join in with everything straight away — nobody will mind, and nobody will put you on the spot.

The service

The morning service starts at 10:30am and usually lasts about an hour. It's a mix of:

• Hymns and songs — the words are shown on screen or in a book, so you can join in as much or as little as you like.
• Prayers — someone leads the church in prayer aloud; you're welcome to pray along silently in your own words, or simply listen.
• Bible readings and a talk — we usually have a short all-age talk followed by a sermon based on a Bible passage, explaining what it means and how it connects to everyday life.

Children are welcome throughout, and depending on numbers there are usually activities for them during the service.

Communion

On the 1st and 3rd Sunday of the month (so roughly fortnightly) we share communion — bread and a cup are passed round the church as a way of remembering Jesus' death and resurrection. Everyone is welcome to take part. If you'd rather not — whether you're unsure, not ready, or simply don't want to — that's completely fine. Just pass the elements along without taking any; nothing is said or expected, and nobody will feel you need to explain yourself.

Afterwards

Refreshments are served after the service, which is a relaxed opportunity to chat and get to know people — no obligation to stay if you need to get off.
